Endorsed by the Council in 2019, The Parade Masterplan sets the future design framework for enhancing one of South Australia’s premier mainstreets, The Parade, while retaining its unique character and position as a key cultural, economic, and civic destination for the community and visitors to the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters.

Over the past 20 years, The Parade has grown with new developments and residents who now have The Parade at their doorsteps. However, its infrastructure—now over 25 years old—has aged to a condition where it is reaching the end of its useful life and needs to be replaced.

The Council is in the process of progressing design work to upgrade the existing infrastructure so that it meets the contemporary needs of the community and reinforces The Parade as a place for people.

Upgrades include improved footpaths and pedestrian crossing points at side streets and adjacent to Norwood Oval, the removal of on-street parking between Edward and George Streets, and improvements to public lighting, greening, and amenities such as furniture and spaces that strengthen the urban character of The Parade as a safe, comfortable, and desirable place for people of all ages to visit and gather throughout the day and night.

The George Street Upgrade, the first phase of the Masterplan starting in 2025, will create a more inviting environment by replacing parking with wider pedestrian paths, new trees, and garden beds to increase canopy cover and reduce urban heat. Enhanced lighting will improve safety and encourage street activity into the evening.

With $30 million allocated, the Masterplan is set to reshape The Parade, ensuring it remains a welcoming and accessible destination for everyone.
